Transitioning To A Toddler Bed

Transitioning To A Toddler Bed

Leo has refused to sleep in his crib since he was 7 months old. We've put him to bed in swings, strollers, car seats and baby carriers. Whenever Marcelo and I tried to move our sleeping cutie to the crib he would immediately wake up and refuse to go back down.

Once Leo turned 1 we decided that he was going to transition to a toddler bed.

Leo will nap in our bed no problem. Our hope was that in a toddler bed he would go to sleep through the night.

One week before his first birthday we headed to IKEA to select a bed we could fit in our room to start and then move into his own room once he was sleeping through the night.

Even though we went to pick out a strictly bed Marcelo & I decided that the Sundvik convertible crib would be a better option. There would be walls on three side of Leo so we wouldn't have to worry about him rolling out of the bed.

We also picked up the Vyssa Sloa mattress which had the best padding while still being firm.

We put everything together and wedged the toddler bed between our bed and the wall.

The hope was that Leo would enjoy sleeping in his own bed as much as he liked ours.

At first he didn't want to even go near it. So Marcelo & I put a few toys in the bed to get Leo used to being in it and played some peek-a-boo hiding behind the headboard. We started doing bedtime stories in the crib. Best (since it was right next to our bed) when he wakes up at night he can see us, know he's safe and go back to sleep.

Ultimately it's still a work in progress. Some nights he only sleeps 4 hours in the bed. But we're getting closer every day!

Did you have trouble transitioning your child to a toddler bed? Are they still in a crib? Or do they have a unique sleeping place? We'd love to hear from you.
