What To Watch This Weekend Best Picture Nominee: Manchester By The Sea
Everyone in Manchester By The Sea is broken. Their lives are difficult, hard and confusing. If it wasn't for their smart wit and quick humor the movie would pull you down into such a hole of sadness it would be unbearable to watch.
I've been trying to think about what's at the heart of Manchester By The Sea.
At the end of all my thinking I keep coming back to two large themes from the movie.
Loss and forgiveness. How to resolve them.
There are losses so big that you think life should end and how to resolve losses that are unfair and confusing.
Making peace with an unfair hand that life has dealt you. Coming to an agreement with yourself that life goes on and you must as well. Lastly forgiving yourself and others. Forgiveness is really the only way to ever move forward. Accepting it (especially from yourself) can be impossible to do.
You may feel the ending of Manchester is unresolved. But to me it was real and fulfilling. The characters turn a corner and start making their way down a new path. Their lives are going in a new direction and as with any new direction there is hope. They may not realize it yet but there can be a light at the end of their tunnel.
