Since becoming a mom do you take time out for a beauty routine?
Before baby I put on some makeup every day to go to the office. The drill was: foundation, eye shadow, mascara, concealer, lipstick, blush & perfume. That was my bare minimum!
After our son was born things went the other way. I'm at home so the old getting ready routine no longer applies. Plus now my boss doesn't care what I wear, just that I bring hugs, kisses and a smile.
After an Audrey Hepburn movie binge I realized that she was the original movie makeover woman. She starred in four of the best makeover movies.
My Fair Lady
Audrey was such a classic elegant beauty who made looking chic effortless and simple.
I decided that's what I need a little ritual which, depending on the day leaves me feeling as refined, polished and pretty as possible.
I've cultivated a beauty routine that falls into several categories depending on what type of day I am having.
On A Bad Day
On a bad day where I'm still in pajamas at 1:00 PM breaking away for a moment to brush my teeth and put in my contact lenses I will take a quick moment to spray my hair with dry shampoo.
My hair gets super oily at the roots so I feel pretty gross unless I shampoo it every day.
After my son was born I started using Dry Shampoo. It's so light and quick! I only have to do a few sprays on my head in the bathroom. Then by the time I get back to him I just do a quick massage and va-voom! Body and texture. If I do a quick braid while we are playing it doesn't lie flat and greasy on my head and I feel ready to run around for the day.
On A Regular Day
On a regular day I don't want to spend too much time on make up. I also don't want products that I will have to re-apply or that look obvious when they wear off.
I'll hop out of the shower and apply Aveeno Smart Essentials with SPF 30. It gives my skin a brightening effect, moisturizes without being greasy, plus SPF 30 so no worrying about those harmful UV rays.
Then I add my favorite mascara Trish McAvoy High Volume Mascara in Black. It curls your lashes by enveloping them in tubes. This means if baby and I take a nap no waking up with raccoon eyes or mascara stains on the pillow!
I top it off with Dior Addict Lip Glow. It's designed to look different on every woman by enhancing your natural lip color and bringing out a pink hue unique to you.
All-in-all this routine takes me a little less than 5 minutes and eliminates the need for eyelash curlers, lip liners, highlighter creams and such.
On A Really Good Day
I'm able to add some more products into the mix. This is usually on the days when my mother is helping me out and is playing with the baby while I take a shower and get dressed so I have extra time to pamper myself.
I like to mix it up by putting on Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat. I have been using this product for 9 years. It's always a staple in my purse and I haven't found anything else to match it. The concealer/highlighter works to make dark circles under your eyes dissipate. It brightens the applied area so you look awake, alive and less like a zombie mom (A Mombie) ! I find re-application during the day is often not necessary.
Two new products I have started using are both by Glossier. The first is their Generation G Matte Lipstick. I ordered this in the color Like which goes on in a complimentary subtle pink color.
The other is their new Boy Brow product. (This is great for me since I haven't plucked my eyebrows in over a year.) It has a creamy wax that isn't thick or sticky combined with color so you can shape and apply a little oomph at the same time.T
his routine is total about 10-15 minutes (a big indulgence I know!)
On A Ridiculous Day
This is usually a weekend when my husband is home or my mother is over while the baby is down for a nap.
On these days I go bananas and give myself......A FACIAL!
While I was pregnant I started getting really bad acne. Nothing I did would combat it. Until I tried the GLAMGLOW face mask. It worked wonders and helped control the never ending breakouts during all 9 months while I was pregnant.
Now that the baby is here and my hormones have settled, I still like to nourish my skin with their products. Sephora sells travel jars for $22 each. I like to buy these and try out different items in their skin care line.
They each stay on for 20 minutes minimum. I wash them off in the shower and see a visible difference when I use them.
I like to add another Glossier product to my routine on these days. Before I apply moisturizer I put on Glossier Superglow it adds Vitamin C to your skin and evens out skin tone.
To top it all off I use Nivea Skin Firming & Smoothing Serum on my stomach, butt and thighs. The weight I gained from having a baby is all still there. I don't mind it but that area of my body has really stretched out so applying a little creme to firm up my skin always makes me feel a little better. Plus it leaves your skin feeling super smooth!
So when my husband gives me a hug or tells me I'm beautiful I like knowing my skin feel soft to his touch.
This routine including the shower and face mask usually takes me 35-40 minutes. I typically make use of the 20 minute facial mask by folding laundry or loading up the dishwasher. And since I have help there is still time left after to do something crazy like eat lunch with both hands, LOL
What is your make-up routine? Do you have one? Do you feel like you need one? Are you glad to be rid of it? Would you want to have it back? And what's your favorite makeover movie or makeover scene? There are so many great ones out there to choose from!
